Internet Day SF 2025 Summary

Wrap Up – Internet Day San Francisco 2025

This event was led by David Issa, Internet Society Vice-chair. Guiding us through our Training and Thought Leadership sessions and activities such as reviewing Eileen Clegg’s Internet Mural.

During the morning Training session, led by Daveed Benjamin, founder of Meta-Layer Initiative and ISOC SF board member; attendees learned about web3 technologies and popular products. In the afternoon Thought Leadership sessions, we had a variety of discussions around the impact of the Internet today and consideration of the Internet in the future. Ronald Petty, ISOC SF chair, opened the session with a focus on factors of growth and latency and how these dimensions affect our utilization of the Internet. Erika Anderson, co-founder of StoryTell.ai, provided an introduction to humane tech metrics as a way to help balance the design and usage of Internet enabled systems. Odera Nwosu, SFSU ACM chair, reminded us what is important when considering the sanctity of personal data on the Internet. Deep Patel, security principal security architect at Cisco, highlighted the dichotomy of what we might lose and might gain as the Internet evolves. Daveed Benjamin, founder Meta-Layer Initiative, provided an overview of the Meta Layer including what it means and its goals, ending with a call to action. This short paragraph only hints at what was discussed, if you are interested in learning more, please review the presentation or watch the recording (links below).

Attendees also had a chance to interact with the Internet Mural by Eileen Clegg, co-founder of Tapestry. This mural was developed to capture the first 50 years of the Internet and originally displayed at the IEEE i50 event in May 2024. A living document, the Internet Mural continues to evolve with new contributions. We thank Eileen for entrusting us to display this wonderful piece. Additionally, we discussed projects such as the Internet Mapping Project by Kevin Kelly (Wired Magazine) and participated in game show quizzes.
