The final SF-Bay Area ISOC Chapter event of the year is here! Our keynote speakers from the Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF), Mitch Stoltz and Jeremy Malcolm, will be taking us through Shadow Regulation and discussing the regulation of Internet content through ICANN and the domain name system (DNS). We look forward to seeing you at this lively evening event! What is Shadow Regulation? Did you know that Shadow Regulation can involve restrictions on the Internet’s use and content that are as effective as any law without the need for approval by a court or parliament? These regulations are quietly reshaping our Internet without our knowledge or input. Mitch and Jeremy will introduce the Electronic Frontier Foundation’s Shadow Regulation Project, which takes a fresh look at private agreements to regulate Internet use and content.

About the Speakers

Mitch Stoltz is a Senior Staff Attorney at the Electronic Frontier Foundation. Mitch works on cases where free speech and innovation collide with copyright and trademark law. His current projects include improving the legal environment for mobile software developers and tinkerers, fighting the use of copyright as a tool for censorship, litigating on the copyright status of mandatory safety codes, and analyzing the legal field of Internet television and video. Mitch also counsels clients on Internet video technology and open source software licensing | More.

Jeremy Malcolm joined EFF’s international team in 2014 and works on the international dimensions of issues such as intellectual property, network neutrality, Internet governance, and trade. Prior to that he worked for Consumers International coordinating its global programme Consumers in the Digital Age | More.

Mark Buell is the Regional Bureau Director for North America. In this role, Mark oversees the Internet Society’s engagement activities in Canada and the United States | More.

Leah Symekher is the President and Chair of the SF-Bay Area ISOC Chapter. Her career in technology companies began at Microsoft and continued in several other technology organizations including PAIX (Palo Alto Internet Exchange), Skybox Security, Laszlo Systems and Internet Systems Consortium | More.

What are my transport/parking options getting to the event?

The venue is easily accessible via public transport. Parking spaces are very limited on site, so we strongly suggest that attendees use public transport to attend the event.
