Chapter Update: February 2017

Find out what we’ve been doing over the past few weeks:

  • Elections 2017
Chapter Board Elections took place in January. Thank you to all those members who voted. We welcome new Board members Fatema Kothari (Vice Chair) and Misako Manca (Secretary) and congratulate Susannah Gray on her move to Chair. We say farewell and thank you to Chair & President Leah Symekher, who steps aside after a three-year term, long-time Board member Jim Ausman, and Jean-Jacques Subrenat, Global Representative. Both Leah and Jean-Jacques will remain involved with the Board as advisors. Find out more about our new Board.
  •  Kick off of the Rural Broadband Measurement Project
At the end of the 2016, the SF-Bay Area Chapter learned that it had been successful in securing funding from the Internet Society’s Beyond the Net program for the “Bridging California’s Rural/Urban Digital Divide with Mobile Broadband” project. The Board met with California State University (CSU) Geographical Information Center (GIC), Chico and Valley Vision representatives to kick off this fascinating project in January. Check out the blog post about the project.
  • Chapter Working Groups
We welcomed two new Working Group Chairs, Brandie Nonnecke and Jackie Kerr, to head up our newly formed WGs. Brandie will be leading the Working Group on Internet Governance and Jackie will be leading the Working Group on Data Protection, Privacy and Security. Both bring a wealth of experience in their respective fields. Learn more about the WGs, the Chairs and how you can get involved.
  • NARALO Activities
The SF-Bay Area Chapter participates in the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) community as an At-Large Structure (ALS). Within ICANN, the At-Large Community acts on the interests of Internet users and works to ensure that the Internet continues to serve the global public interest. More info about our participation in NARALO.
